What is the Platinum Rule?.Day 10 Part 2

Since this wake up call I have learned the “Platinum Rule” the hard way.

Turning to my own situation, although in somewhat different circumstances…I give below my own brief story to explain matters.
I was a quiet, unassuming young person and people took me for granted and/or took advantage of my naivety.  People thought that I was a “soft touch” and unfortunately I learnt the hard way about how to deal with many challenges through pure hard experience.
Such as setting up a partnership to promote original paintings

I trusted this guy and funny enough his name was Rob! It was a terrible experience – it took me a long time to realise that he was messing with our finances (without going into detail). Suddenly, one day I woke up to what he was doing and I was so angry to have been taken for a ride for so long. But for that we could have developed a nice little business back in the 1960’s. Immediately I took him to court and it was just as well that I did because the next thing I hear is that he and his wife were emigrating to Australia! Of course he could not leave the country with a court case pending. So on the day of the court hearing he decided finally to settle out of court!

Another business opportunity when approached by a friend

Another example of taking advantage of my easy going nature was in the 1980’s when a “friend” approached me a business . He had been involved in a publishing house but was looking to have a change of direction in his career. He knew that I was running a number of trade associations on my own and suggested that by working together we could expand the business and take on more trade associations.

He wanted to form a partnership but the formalities took so much time that we decided to proceed anyway. That was in or around June of that particular year. We celebrated with a wonderful weekend away; he purchased a new car and I purchased a static caravan situated in a caravan park in Dorset and we rented office accommodation too!

There was no doubt at the time that everything was looking very encouraging – we were able to develop the scope of the associations and even took on one or two more! This was all going so well and then A BOMBSHELL HIT ME in the December! He arranged a lunch to discuss something very urgent with me. He said that completely out of the blue he had been headhunted by another publishing house and it was a “once in a lifetime” opportunity and felt that he would have to go for it! Of course he wanted my reaction but I was dumbfounded! What could I do – there was a saving grace in that we had still not formally signed the partnership agreement. (I gather that the draft agreement could have been legally binding). Anyway, I discussed this with Janet and we came to the conclusion that we could not really stand in his way. The final closing of the partnership was quite amicable but later I realised that on balance he “got away with blue murder” and I had to soldier on for another six months to clear everything up.

A few weeks later in the middle of the night (I think) it dawned on me that this “friend” had just been using me as a “temporary stopgap” whilst he hunted for a new opportunity or indeed he was already aware of that opportunity starting in the January!

In my long career in trade association administration there have been a number of pains in my back (and neck!) caused by stabbing! Anyway, over many years now I have quietly overcome these challenges and have been quite philosophical about the different situations. It is strange how I have been very happy in my life despite everything whereas I noticed that some of those “who have done the dirty on me” do not feel very comfortable whenever, very occasionally, we meet up. They can’t look at me straight in the face!

A QUOTATION

The proverb has been traced back to ‘Teacher’s Manual’ (1840) by American educator Thomas H. Palmer and ‘The Children of the New Forest’ (1847) by English novelistFrederick Maryat (1792-1848).

The original phrase: ‘Tis a lesson you should heed, try, try again. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.’

A SONG

Uploaded by Joseph Morales

When I wake up yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I’m working yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I’ll do
I’ll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man who’s growing old with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I’m lonely yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I’m dreaming yes I know I’m gonna dream
Dream about the time when I’m with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
