What are Categories, Pages, Comments – introducing Appearance?.. ILSK Part 6 Day 24

Here, you are getting to the Heart of the Internet Lifestyle Starter Kit….

Categories – How to organize your posts into logical groups, to make your content more relevant to your readers.

Click on a Post and then ADD a new category by clicking on to it. This brings up eg “Building Relationships” under the heading CATEGORIES.

Go to a Post eg “How to win friends etc” -just click Posts and you will see that the Post has been categorised as above! More details in Training.

Pages – The difference between posts and pages and where and why you should use pages. Similar to Posts except that Pages are static. These would be like About Me, Products, Contact etc on your website.

Creating a Page is almost the same as creating a Post. Click on Pages on the left hand side bar and say create “About Me” Page and then click Publish in the right hand side bar. This would only appear on the Menu Bar on your website. (See later for training about Menus). Refresh your website and “About Me” will appear on the Menu Bar. Later you will be shown how to place the Pages in the order you want.

Comments  – When people write comments on your blog, you need to approve them before they appear. Click on Comments section in the left hand side bar and you may see one or two comments already! You have the choice of Approving them, Trashing them etc and here, for instance, is what you would do if you receive robotic replies, basically spam.

Now you need to go to Plugins in the left hand side bar and find Askismet and ACTIVATE IT. That is where you enter your Askismet key for it to work. Details in Training.

Appearance – is what makes your blog unique to all other blogs. Here you can change the complete look and feel of your blog, change headers, add menus and add content to the sidebars. Click onto Appearance then download to Themes and then click on “Install Themes.” It could bring up a theme of your choice such as Money Online and in turn there are different designs. Choose one and click “install now” – download and activate. Go back to the website and refresh. It will show a new website whilst retaining all content……
Now, bear in mind that by this step by step method of training you will be able to build your own website by the end of it and activate the knowledge you require. Certainly we are always here to help you.

In the next blog post we shall cover the following trainings:

Themes are what give your blog its look and feel. They’re very easy to change in WordPress – if you don’t like the look of your website just change it.

Widgets – are easy to use extra bits of functionality that usually appear on the right hand or bottom of your blog. Check out the video for a full explanation.

Menus – you can create your own multi level menus as simple as dragging and dropping the menu to where you want it to appear.

Header – if you have a customized header or image you want to appear at the top of your blog, this is where you go to add it in.

Background – you can also change the background colour of your website. Our recommendation is to just leave this up to whichever theme you’re using.
