Part Two highlights many other great events and news

Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne of Great Britain for 60 years, and in early June celebrated her diamond jubilee. She is considered queen for 16 nations and the titular head of 54 countries that make up the Commonwealth of Nations. All celebrated this very special event.

A huge turnout

If you watched the celebrations in June, you saw hundreds of thousands of people (who braved somewhat miserable weather) line the banks of the River Thames and watch a flotilla of a thousand boats of every possible kind pass under Tower Bridge and salute the queen. By any standard, this event broke many records.

The 1,000-boat flotilla, the jubilee concert and the service at St. Paul’s Cathedral will no doubt remain some of the most photographed events in modern history. The jubilee celebrations were almost three years in planning; and apart from the weather—always unpredictable in England—they all went off without a noticeable hitch! Of course, Queen Elizabeth missed having her husband, Prince Philip, by her side for the last two days of celebration. At 91 years old, many were concerned for his health after he was taken to King Edward VII hospital with a bladder infection.

Some important Anniversaries – too many to mention but I would like personally to add a few highlights which have influenced me in one way or another.

50th Anniversary of The Beatles First Record

They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first single, “Love Me Do”, became a modest hit in late 1962. On 4 September 1962, , they arrived at EMI Studios in London early in the afternoon where they set up their equipment in Studio 3 and began rehearsing six songs including:  “Love Me Do.”  “Love Me Do” is the Beatles first single, backed by “P.S. I Love You” and released on 5 October 1962. When the single was originally released in the United Kingdom, it peaked at number seventeen; in 1982 it was re-issued and reached number four. In the United States the single was a number one hit in 1964. As they say “the rest is history.”

50th Anniversary of The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones performed for more than two hours to thousands of fans from across the world as they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

The Stones were joined by former band mates Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor for the first time in more than 20 years as they played a 23-song set in London. Will Gompertz reports.

Stones ‘still leading the pack’

Couples take last unusual wedding date of the century 12/12/12

By Josephine McDermott BBC News, London

Joeh and Ginny Chan got married at 12:00 GMT on 12/12/12

Fifty-one ceremonies will take place in the district of Gretna in southern Scotland, which is well known for Gretna Green – a 25-fold increase on the same day last year.

It will be just over 88 years before 01/01/2101 comes around.

In Gloucestershire, West England, there will be 12 ceremonies. The number of weddings on an average Wednesday is one.

‘Won’t forget date’

THERE ARE MANY OTHER HIGHLIGHTS TO REMEMBER too numerous to mention here – one could refer to a sad one – “The sinking of the Titanic” one hundred years ago on 12th April 1912 but we are only here to look back at the good times! IF YOU WOULD LEAVE A COMMENT ABOUT YOUR MEMORIES FOR THIS YEAR PLEASE WRITE IN THE REPLY BOX BELOW.

The highest of our personal highlights

This was the birth of our first grandson on 29th June in Japan. His name is Jack and our son John and Chihiro are the very proud parents. Almost every day we receive photos and short videos of Jack so although Japan is nearly 6,000 miles away we are seeing our grandson growing up so quickly.

We would much prefer to cuddle him personally as very excited grandparents but we will have to wait a short while longer before they visit us here in Westward Ho! North Devon into 2013! Our daugher Claire and my sister Jean live locally and they are also so looking forward to seeing them all.

Hi Lesly Just a little follow-up. I am in the same age group as The Rolling Stones and it was one of my regrets that I did not see them in these last 50 years!

  2. Hi John, wonderful news about your latest arrival! It’s always a great celebration when there’s a new baby in the family.

Love your post and what a great idea to celebrate everything that’s great about 2012.

For me becoming part of Networking Superstars was a good thing for 2012, I’ve found everyone so helpful and friendly and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the group. I also got to drive a horse and carriage for the first time, which was just splendid.

Looking forward to working more closely with you over the coming weeks.

    Enjoy the journey.
