Live for the Moment or Post for the Moment!.. Day 13 Part 2

Live for the Moment or Post for the Moment!.. Day 13 Part 2
Now let me tell you a story following on from Part 1 .
Records 1956 - 1960
Top of the Charts May – August 1959
“…..occasionally you see or hear something that reminds you of special things and events from your past. One such thing happened yesterday, on the radio .. when I heard the song “It’s now or never” by Elvis Presley. On this day in 1960 this record was at number One in the UK Top Twenty Record Chart and stayed there for five weeks.“It’s now or never” by Elvis Presley…”
All these events – 1960, “It’s now or never” by Elvis Presley…etc brought back a flood of memories – a very happy and unhappy time of my young life. This song really sums up what was going to happen but I did not see at the time.
Where do I start? How about the beginning! In August 1959, my friend Trevor and I went for a week’s holiday to Butlin’s Holiday Camp at Skegness in Lincolnshire.
It was love at first sight – my very first real love and one I have never forgotten.
I expect that most people will always remember their very first love in particular!
The late 1950’s/early 1960’s was still a period of time in our lives where “young innocence” was still  in abundance – really before the youth of this country became gripped by “Flower Power and Drug Addiction.”
Anyway, let us get into the heart of the story. I met Judith from Urmston near Manchester probably on the first evening there with her girlfriend. It was a case of “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific:-
“You may see a stranger,
You may see a stranger across a crowded room,
And somehow you know, you know even then,
That somehow you’ll see here again and again. ..Some enchanted evening, when you find your true love,
When you hear her call you across a crowded room,
Then fly to her side and make her your own,
Or all through your life you may dream all alone.
Once you have found her, never let her go…”
The actual song!

It was, apart from the times since I’ve known my wife,  the most romantic time ever. The weather was beautiful, Butlin’s was at it’s very best with “free” entertainment every night including Billy Fury who was a redcoat before hitting the big time, the nightly dancing, the swimming pool and the sports arena!
Great memories and great music which all seemed so appropriate at the time in particular:-
“Dream Lover” by Bobby Darin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm9LBiLRFwo
“A Million Stars Above” by Petula Clark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aA2W6eHggI
“Manhattan Spiritual”  – Reg Owen Orchestra (1959)
All these songs are attached to my memory.
1) “Dream Lover” – it was one of the latest records at the time and I sang this song at a concert for anyone brave enough to perform in public! The start of my Karaoke Career!
2)  “A Million Stars Above” – all can remember is Judith and I sat under a beautiful clear evening sky in the dark in the Sports Arena!
3)  “Manhattan Spiritual” – Every evening in the Ballroom, Judith and I would dance the night away to this wonderful quickstep!
Butlins Swimming Skegness
Picture of Skegness Swimming Pool at it looks today – a bit different from 1959!
We enjoyed swimming together and so often I am reminded of those halcyon days by seeing some of those old t.v. documentaries and films!
I still swim in the lovely heated indoor and outdoor swimming at the Barnstable Hotel Leisure Club. Old habits die hard!

This blog was going to be one full blog only. BUT I have now gone over my pre-determined word limit and so I will have to leave you in suspense until the 3rd and Final Part of ‘Live for the Moment or Post for the Moment!

With special thanks to all those people who inspired me to write this content. There are too many to name individually!
