There is a “must see” video at the end of this post which will give you a clear insight to Emotional Intelligence – What’s It All About!…..

Emotional Intelligence is such a driving force within our bodies – everyone is different but thank God we all have this wonderful gift to some degree or another. It is made up of so many experiences and levels of intelligence. All this appreciation arose out of a recent networking breakfast meeting when Karin Thomas of Red Oak Coaching, Barnstaple gave a fascinating presentation! http://www.redoakcoaching.co.uk/

It inspired me to undertake some research – it seems to be a subject that does not appear to have received much publicity but I realised when Karin started her talk this was so important –  Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Social Management, EI is as important as IQ and Forgiveness.  It just got me totally inspired and resonated with me so much.

By chance, I was listening to a BBC Radio Programme and a certain Terry Wogan was interviewing an American girl singer – she said that her songs and music had always moved her emotionally to what happened in her life and through it all she was able to help others honestly in their darkest moments and traumas. Well, that’s a great example of Emotional Intelligence!

As some of you may know I am motivated by the Inspiration of Others and the Love of Music!

HERE ARE SOME OF THE RESULTS OF MY RESEARCH – You are most welcome to add your thoughts and comments below.

“What’s it all about, Alfie?” sung by Cilla Black

Listen to the words and that will tell you just how “you feel it in your fingers!”

Emotion derives from many things – you may have guessed – mine is music!

One simple definition of emotional intelligence is “the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups.”

Daniel Goleman popularized the concept of emotional intelligence in his New York Times best seller, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.

“Emotional competence is the single most important personal quality that each of us must develop and access to experience a breakthrough. Only through managing our emotions can we access our intellect and our technical competence. An emotionally competent person performs better under pressure.” – Dave Lennick, Executive VP, American Express Financial Advisers

“Emotional Intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions. Research suggests it is responsible for as much as 80% of the “success” in our lives.” — J. Freedman

Emotional Intelligence is the Difference That Makes the Difference

“I first learned about emotional intelligence during one of my early leadership trainings. The more I learned about emotional intelligence, the more I learned to appreciate it. I eventually saw how emotional intelligence is the difference that makes the difference. A lack of emotional intelligence is what limits some people in their ability to manage themselves, manage others, or manage situations.

On the flip side, I’ve seen people with strong emotional intelligence skills rise above any situation. They don’t let other people push their buttons, and they connect with others more effectively.”

Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman is the author of “Working With Emotional Intelligence”. Goleman believes that I.Q. is not longer as valued as it once was as being an indicator of a person’s success. Now it is Emotional Intelligence that has become the new yardstick. Emotional Intelligence refers to areas like self-awareness, empathy and social skills, and it is these qualities that employers are now looking for. (Originally aired February 1999)
